Tickets are now on sale for the exciting new show from Kagemusha Taiko, the first major performance by the group in Exeter since “A Good Death” in Exeter Cathedral in December 2017.

Taiko is drum theatre.  Using taiko, Kagemusha Taiko create moods, explore the tension between space and time, and tell stories.  “Shadow Warrior” is the English translation of “Kagemusha”, and this show is very much Western European in nature, drawing on stories of Merlin, Beowulf and Norse mythology.  There’s new instrumentation as well as new themes in this show…

Shadow Warrior  reunites Kagemusha Taiko with original group member Kordian Tetkov.  Having been spellbound by a solo performance by Kordian on gongs and percussion, artistic director Jonathan Kirby invited him to collaborate with the group for this one, special performance.  Drums and gongs together weave a particular kind of magic.  Don’t miss it!

In the second half of the show, this particular taiko journey heads into new territory with the addition of bass guitar and vocals.  Back in the day, brothers Jonathan and Tim Kirby performed to critical acclaim as Diatribe, with releases on the Criminal Damage record label and John Peel session on BBC Radio 1 to their credit.  Tim now brings his voice and his bass to the world of taiko.  It’s a powerful combination.

Tickets are limited, so book now in order to avoid disappointment.

Kagemusha Taiko are pleased to announce a weekend-long workshop with Eri Uchida.

Eri’s taiko connection began as a teenager by the local community where she grew up in Japan, then whilst studying abroad in Canada Eri started her own taiko group at the High School she attended.

To further her studies, Eri joined the Kodo Apprenticeship Program in 2007 and became a performing member for Kodo in 2009. Since then, Eri has travelled all over the world performing, directing school presentations, as well as teaching workshops. In addition, Eri oversaw the day-to-day working of the Kodo Apprenticeship Program, helping to train and welcome new Kodo member prospects. Eri was an assistant to Eiichi Saito during the 2nd European Taiko Conference, and throughout their European workshop tour in 2017.

Eri left Kodo in May 2019 in pursuit of sharing the skills and philosophies she had gained through taiko with hopes of expanding the limitless possibilities of taiko and its community and it is very exciting that this will be the first time Eri will be leading workshops in the UK.

Eri’s brilliant workshop will help people create a direct connection between the taiko and their body. Individuals will learn to develop this connection and explore how this unique relationship leads to effective fundamentals in creating good sounds. Eri is an incredible teacher and this workshop will be an amazing opportunity to learn some core skills to help any taiko player improve.

This workshop will involve drills and exercises on nagados and katsugi okedo and look at the following elements;

・How to connect the body whilst playing and use it effectively.

・How to relax and play.

・How to listen and feel when playing in an ensemble.

・How to produce the best resonance of taiko through efficient use of the body, which allows for internal connection and external connection with each other.

Approximate workshop timings are;

Saturday 25th April – 10 am – 5 pm
Sunday 26th April – 10 am – 1pm

Price does not include accommodation or food.
